| State IssuesIssue Leader: Shahryar Minhas The fate of Michigan's economy throughout the 21st century was intertwined with its' auto industry, and as the auto industry has declined the economy of Michigan has gone down with it. Today, Michigan has one of the highest unemployment rates in the United States, 7%, and job opportunities in the state are declining. It has to be wondered what can be done to stem the decline of Michigan. Some questions to answer are should Michigan's main industry continue to be the manufacturing of automobiles this has certainly been one of Governor Granholm's plans as she has been focusing on brining Japanese auto manufacturers to Detroit. Or should we be attempting to diversify industry in Michigan and if so to what? Is the development of a better primary and secondary education system essential before Michigan should start expending money to create a more business friendly atmosphere? The purpose of this group is to put forth proposals about how Michigan can recover from the malaise which has been affecting its' economy since the late 1980s.
